The Welsh Assembly government has responded to the Secretary General of the Celtic League who wrote to all governments in the Celtic countries urging action to assist the refugees from Syria and North Africa (see link);

Assembly government Migration Policy Manager, Carol Godfrey says;

“Thank you for your e-mail of 7 September to the First Minister regarding Syrian refugees being accepted into the UK. I have been asked to reply.

Immigration policy is not devolved to the Welsh Government and the decision on the number of asylum seekers to be admitted into the UK is the responsibility of the UK Government. On 7 September the Prime Minister announced that the UK would accept twenty thousand Syrian refugees over the term of this Parliament.

As indicated by the First Minister, the Welsh Government is ready to play its part and make welcome a number of these Syrian refugees. I am unable to provide you with any further details at present as discussions will be taking place between the Welsh Government and UK Government regarding the implementation of the measures announced on 7 September. However, I can inform you that the First Minister has announced he will be holding a summit next week to bring together key agencies and service providers to jointly develop the most effective and collective response.”

Yesterday the Irish government also announced an extended quota of refugees would be accommodated and said initial planning moves were being put in hand to ease the integration of the arrivals into the community.
