The turn of the old to the New Year is a time to look back. Some of the Manx media are looking back on the past twelve months. We look further.
This year we lost another great Manxman Brian Stowell who was buried in January 2019. Brian’s legacy is often seen as synonymous with the Manx language and culture and certainly as regards the language he was in addition to his powerful presence in Mann a pivotal figure in contributing articles in Manx to Carn the journal of the Celtic League for decades which brought the Manx language in a topical context to a wider inter Celtic audience on a quarterly basis.
However he was not just limited to Manx being also fluent in Irish and on occasion contributing articles to the Irish section as he did in Carn in Spring 1991. In the article he also displayed his political emphasis as the item focus – to use his own precis:
“Manxness clings on in a climate of big finance in Mann. The Manx are still reluctant to organise politically”
