STRANDED SUBMARINE: LEAGUE WARNING PROPHETIC
Today’s incident off Skye involving a stranded British nuclear submarine is just the type of incident we had warned about when three weeks ago we cautioned against any cuts to the provision of Emergency Towing Vessels (ETV) around the
UK.

Indeed our warning was prophetic because in the recently announced government spending review one of the areas targeted was ETV provision.
The warning was doubly prophetic in that one of the instances we highlighted was the delay in getting aid to a stricken submarine (of the Royal Canadian Navy) some years ago to the West of the Hebrides.
The decision to site ETVs in dangerous areas off UK coasts was taken two decades ago following a serious of catastrophic incidents. Today’s events unfolding off Skye illustrate that the dangers posed by both military and merchant vessels are
ever present.
It is to be hoped that in the light of this latest incident political pressure will be brought to bear on the UK government to rethink their strategy.
