It’s like something out of WW 2 and the activities of the Abwehr or more recently the tellingly sited Russian Embassy on ‘Orwell Road’ in Dublin, However it’s neither; recent allegations about spying allege the United Kingdom has had a spy at the heart of the Irish Government in the Dail for decades.
The United Kingdom spying on Ireland is not new indeed Celtic League broke the story in the early 1980s of the UK intercepting microwave communications between Britain and Ireland; they even built a special communications facility at Capenhurst just for the purpose; hot wired to GCHQ (see link).
However this takes it to another level and is all the more believable because the source is a former member of the Force Research Unit (FRU) in the North of Ireland one of a group of British Intelligence organisations that were set up during the troubles and included the British Army’s Military Reaction Force (MRF) which became 14th Intelligence Company (Det) and reputedly colluded in the bombings of Dublin and Monaghan and murders of civilians such as Seamus Ludlow in the 26 Counties.
The spying allegations surfaced before Xmas and are reported in the Belfast based ‘Irish News’ paper – link below.
One TD, Peadar Tóibín, leader of the minority Aontú says the allegations should be taken seriously; he’s called for spies to be rooted out and expelled.
