The Celtic League General Secretary, Rhisiart Tal-e-bot, has congratulated Manx Environment Minister, John Shimmin MHK, for the robust stance he has adopted on the Sellafield nuclear plant (see below):

“Dear Minister John Shimmin MHK

Amendment of Policy in relation to Sellafield

I am writing to congratulate you on your stance in relation to the proposed amendment that will be put to the March 16th sitting of Tynwald next week.

The Celtic League has opposed operations at the Sellafield site (and other
nuclear facilities around the Irish Sea and in the Celtic countries) for many years and welcomes this robust statement from the Manx Government.

I would particularly like to demonstrate our support for your recommendation in the resolution that the Isle of Man Government seeks “to work with other jurisdictions and organisations which have similar objectives and requests the Chief Minister to inform the UK Government of this resolution.” The Celtic League fully supports this initiative and believes that such approaches will maximise opposition to the UK nuclear programme and hopefully lead to the closure of the Sellafield site.

I would also like to applaud your resolution for (re)drawing attention to the policy of geological disposal of potentially hazardous material and the transportation procedures associated with this. The British nuclear power station new build programme over the last year has distracted attention from this dangerous disposal and transportation policy, which should be constantly monitored by all Governments and interested NGO’s.

I will look forward to hearing what the outcome of the resolution is on the 16th March 2010, but for the time being I would like to say thank you for flagging up this important issue.

Yours sincerely

Rhisiart Tal-e-bot
General Secretary
Celtic League”
