‘The Church of Continuous Economic Growth’

A call from the Isle of Man Infrastructure Minister Phillip Gawne for more land to be released to stimulate economic growth has prompted a strong attack from Nationalists.

The Minister made his appeal in an interview carried by radio station 3FM earlier this week (see link):

However responding to Mr Gawne on the Mec Vannin Facebook pages Mec Vannin member and Editor of Yn Pabyr Seyr. Peter Crellin, in an item entitled ‘Are You Feeling Richer? Land Development and The Economic Growth Fallacy’ says:

“The principle of sustained economic growth cares little for the individual, their needs, their families, or their culture: the investors are the ones to please and if you’re lucky enough to be in a position of power, they may return the favour. The principle of sustained economic growth is underpinned by one truth: a handful of people will continue to get wealthier. For the rest of us, we have to sit in overdeveloped”

He also describes advocates of the ‘growth’ strategy as:

“the prophets of the Church of Continuous Economic Growth, however, who will sell anything for a short-term gain in the hands of a few.”
