NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE

On August 5th Isle of Man radio station 3FM reported the following:

“Investors are complaining that there isn’t enough land available to develop for employment purposes on the Island.

It’s a particular problem in the east with evidence showing land supply will dry up in three years if the current-take up is maintained and new sites are not released.

As a result government is now asking landowners and developers to suggest areas which could be released under Development Orders.

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne says we can’t afford to let investment and growth stall:”

On 17th August Manx Radio reported this:

“Call for 15,000 more people for IoM

The Island’s economy is in danger unless we make moves to increase the population.
That’s according to Chamber of Commerce President Micky Swindale, who hopes to bring 15,000 economically active people to the Isle of Man over the next ten years.

Speaking on Manx Radio’s Sunday Opinion programme, she said the consequences of not doing so could be detrimental to the Island if action isn’t taken now:”

On 18th August Manx Radio reported this;

“Improved productivity is key

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne says an extra 15,000 workers will not help the economy.

He was responding to comments the Island faces economic chaos unless it increases its population.

Mr Gawne believes improved productivity the key.

He says thousands of additional workers would make the situation worse.”

Something is definitely being lost in translation here. The Minister ‘fires the starting gun’ the Chamber join in as cheerleaders (all ably aided and abetted by sections of the media) the Minister appears to ‘row-back’?

So did the Chamber of Commerce get it wrong? Was the Minister originally misquoted? Are we all being conned and untrammelled immigration up to a level of 100,000 + is still the objective? You choose!
