The Illiam Dhome commemoration took place last week (2nd January 2014) in Mannin/Isle of Man.

The commemoration takes place every year on Hango Hill (Mount Strange) between Castletown and Derbyhaven on Mannin to mark the execution of Manx nationalist Illiam Dhone by firing squad in 1663. At the commemoration a speech is delivered in Manx and English, which is usually political in nature. The Celtic League and Mec Vannin have traditionally played a leading role in the organisation of the event and members of both groups spoke again this year.

This year Bill Henderson (Member of the House of Keys) delivered the English address and Mark Kermode delivered the Manx address to the crowd of over hundred people, with Mr Henderson’s son laying the wreath to commemorate the ‘Manx Martyr’. The Celtic League’s Director of Information, Bernard Moffatt, who has been involved in the commemoration for decades, also addressed the crowd briefly.
