Croke Park Commemoration Query

Members of the Alba/Scotland Branch have been forwarding text messages to other branch members of the League today (21st November), on the 90th anniversary of the murders of the massacre at Croke Park stadium in Ireland, during a Gaelic football match.

The text message being forwarded says:

“Today, 21st November, is the 90th anniversary of the Croke Park massacre, when British soldiers shot player Michael Hogan and 13 spectators during a football match between Dublin and Tipperary!”

The general secretary of the League, Rhisiart Tal-e-bot, has written to the President of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) asking what preparations, if any, the GAA had made to commemorate the anniversary outside of the GAA museum organising a lecture and tour of Croke Park. Mr Tal-e-bot also stated in his letter that he would write to the GAA at some point in the future to ask what plans were being prepared for the 100th anniversary of the massacre. The full text of the letter can be found below.

Dear Christy Cooney

90th Anniversary of Croke Park Massacre

I am writing to you following a text message that was forwarded to our members yesterday, reminding each other about the Croke Park massacre on 21st November 1920.

Our members were motivated to do this over their concern that the corporate GAA were not doing enough to mark the anniversary, outside of the GAA museum holding a lecture and tour of Croke Park.

Our members hope that the corporate GAA will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the massacre in 2020 in an appropriate and fitting manner and I will aim to write to the GAA at some point in the future asking what their plans are to this effect.

Yours sincerely,

Rhisiart Tal-e-bot
General Secretary
