The Irish Navy humanitarian effort in the Mediterranean continues with the Naval service vessels the LÉ Samuel Beckett rescuing a further 140 migrants attempting the desperate crossing from the Libyan coast in the last 24 hours.

The LÉ Samuel Beckett was deployed in late September and since that time has rescued 3000 migrants. However many still die attempting the crossing on unsuitable vessels sometimes just rubber rafts and despite the advent of harsher weather conditions migratory efforts still continue.

The LÉ Samuel Beckett is the latest of a number of Irish Nava Service ships to be deployed.
