It’s a quarter of a century since I attended and addressed (for Celtic League) a conference in Ballycastle (NI) of officials from the Government of Ireland, Stormont, Political parties in Ireland, politicians from local authorities in Ireland, Scotland, Cumbria and Lancashire and environmental NGOs. One of the conclusions called for monitoring of the Beaufort Dyke munitions dump. Subsequently years later an official Scottish government report recommended similar action.
However as the Scottish Herald newspaper reported recently the UK government has still not instated such a programme:
“A DEADLY trench filled with more than a million tonnes of chemical weapons and munitions is still not being routinely inspected, with hundreds of lethal devices washing up on Scotland’s shores.
“Despite scientists’ advice to the Ministry of Defence to carry out a survey and inspection of Beaufort’s Dyke in the Irish Channel more than a decade ago, the department has confirmed that it has not been regularly checked since then”.
