NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE
The Celtic League has declined an invitation to participate in a conference hosted by the Anti-globalization Movement of Russia in September of this year.
The conference is scheduled to bring together a wide range of separatist groups from across the globe.
However in setting out the Leagues decision to decline the Director of Information says to the movements President that the body seems to be founded more as a consequence of current Russia-Ukrainian tensions and the unfortunate conflict in Eastern Ukraine.
The League suggest both sides should look to International bodies such as the UN and regional bodies like the OCSE to resolve the issue and bring an end to the suffering of civilians in the conflict zone.
The text of the DOI’s letter is set out below:
“Alexander Viktorovitch Ionov
President
The Anti-globalization Movement of Russia
Moscow
Russian Federation
1st August 2015
Dear Alexander Viktorovitch Ionov,
Thank you for the recent invitation to participate in the forthcoming conference your organisation intends to hold on ‘anti-globalization’.
I have had an opportunity to review the information you supplied on your organisation and also have discussed this with the Convenor (Leader) of the Celtic League General Council and also with our General Secretary.
It appears from the documentation that your organisation has been established as a result of the regrettable conflict in Ukraine and not premised as we initially understood on anti-globalisation and self determination per se.
The Celtic League regrets conflict in any global zone particularly where the conflict causes death, injury or distress to innocent civilians. In that respect and because one of our countries of interest is Ireland we are well aware of the suffering that can be inflicted on civilians via protracted conflict.
The Celtic League as an organisation has always been predicated on the resolution of conflict via peaceful means
We are an accredited NGO of the United Nations and we are firm believers in that organisations ability, despite the many criticisms it receives, to resolve or ameliorate global conflict. In addition we believe non partisan regional bodies such as the Organisation for Cooperation and Security in Europe (OCSE) can aid short term suppression of violence and also enable long term solutions. That would certainly be the case in Eastern Ukraine and as both your country and Ukraine are OCSE members that avenue could be given more traction
It is via both the United Nations and the OCSE that both the Russian Federation and Ukraine should look to resolve their current tensions and find lasting solutions and also alleviate the very real suffering that civilians caught in the conflict zone are experiencing.
In all the circumstances and after due consideration of documentation supplied the Celtic League must decline the invitation to your conference.
Yours sincerely,
J B Moffatt (Mr)
Director of Information”
