NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE

Theresa Villiers, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, has responded to the query I forwarded relating to the Kincora Home and allegations of child abuse (link):

Disappointingly the Secretary of State is still insisting the allegations are looked at by the HIA rather than the Goddard Inquiry although the final sentence does leave room for a volte-face.

The text of the reply is set out below:

“Dear Mr. Moffatt

The sexual abuse of children, or any tolerance by people in positions of authority of such activity by others, is abhorrent. This Government has already promised the fullest possible degree of co-operation by all of Her Majesty’s Government and its agencies to determine the facts in relation to Kincora Boys Home. I reiterate that commitment.

As you are aware, in a written statement of 21 October 2014, I announced that following discussions at Ministerial level, it had been decided that the Historical Institutional Abuse (HIA) Inquiry, led by Sir Anthony Hart, was the most appropriate forum to consider the allegations concerning Kincora Boys’ Home. As I made clear in my statement however, if there was any indication from Sir Anthony that the Government’s commitment was not sufficient to establish the facts, I would of course review the matter urgently.”

I would like to place on record my thanks to the secretary of State for taking the time to send a personal response.
