NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE
Republican Sinn Fein has attacked the profligacy of the British government towards the Stormont government at a time of severe austerity in the North of Ireland and throughout Britain.
Pointedly RSF emphasise what many people in Britain will be unaware of and that is that political parties in the North get a direct financial subvention from the British government.
“The DUP receives over £200,000, Sinn Féin gets £178,000 and the SDLP brings in £127,000. This money goes directly to the parties”.
They also point out that:
“MLAs personally receive £5.8 million in salaries and £8.3 million in expenses”.
When the Westminster MPs and councillors, politicians and their parties are included the figure they claim is “about £18 million annually”.
All this profligacy occurs in a ‘statelet’ that has one of the worst hospital waiting lists in Europe with over 370,000 outstanding hospital appointments
RSF also says that parties at Stormont have remained tight-lipped following a recent statement from Church leaders which said:
“The unacceptable level of child poverty, affecting over 100,000 children, roughly six per cent of Northern Ireland’s [sic] population, constitutes a real crisis.”
The Churchmen called for a long-term vision from Stormont to address poverty and socio-economic inequality.
