Manx Radio Is carrying a report that Heysham nuclear plant operator is to extend the service life of its No 1 station on the site:
https://www.manxradio.com/…/working-life-of-ageing…/
It’s perfectly in order for an operator such as EDF to express a ‘wish’ to keep operating the plant but as the Nuclear Regulator says in a statement it has to meet acceptable safety parameters. As ONR put it:
“As the independent nuclear regulator, we will not allow any facility to operate unless we are satisfied that it is safe to do so.”
It well known that there are safety issues at both Heysham 1 and Heysham 2 not least cracking of the graphite which lines ther reactor core, It would also be interesting to know the number of UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWNS which have occurred in recent years,
It is to be hoped the Manx, Irish and Scottish governments will ask to have the safety case for extending the operational life of this plant shared with them.
