The United Kingdom government and Stormont devolved administration have been criticised for failing to enact an Irish Language Act.

The Council of Europe (COE) say it is “essential [to] free the promotion of Irish from political tensions”

They made 20 recommendations for action to end the impasse.

In another headache for the UK the COE said that Cornwall should have a place in its own right at the British Irish Council. Up to now the UK has said it represented the Cornish at the meetings of the body in respect of language and minority rights. The COE says this is not good enough.
