Mann: Chief Minister Responds on Political Party Registration

NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE

The Isle of Man Chief Minister has responded to our query concerning the compatability of new requirements for political party registration with the Council of Europe Venice Commission (see link below):

“Thank you for your letter of 23 September 2015 regarding the new requirement for a political party intending to support or endorse candidates for election to the House of Keys to register.

As you will appreciate there are any number of guidelines or guidance documents which can be drawn on in respect of such matters. The new requirements regarding the registration of political parties form part of the Representation of the People (Amendment) Act 2015. I can confirm that this Act was subject to the same process as other Bills when being drafted, considered by the Keys and Legislative Council and in being granted Royal Assent. This included ensuring that the legislation was compatible with applicable international conventions, binding on the Isle of Man of relevance, which in this instance was the European Convention of Human Rights.”

The Celtic League is grateful for this prompt reply.
