NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE

The Isle of Man Chief Minister, Allan Bell MHK, has been waxing lyrical about the Isle of Man’s economic future and chose to highlight how it was ‘essential to support our efforts to strengthen relations with economic superpowers such as China, a country we visited again this year’.

This may well be so but I think in the pecking order of nations quite a few will be beating a path to the door of the Asian superpower and Mr Bell might like to ponder on a quote by iconic US President Abraham Lincoln. The President speaking about the expectations of those around him at the height of the US Civil War said there were:

‘Too many pigs and not enough tits’

The Isle of Man’s fiscal salvation will not come via relations with a country that half the rest of the world wants to ‘get into bed with’.

In any case China has an unfortunate disregard for both the human rights of its own citizens – not only political activists but also religious minorities (not least Christians what would the Bishop say!)

Equally as our friends in the Celtic League Patagonian branch reminded us earlier this week with a recent post (see picture) ethnic minorities including the Tibetans and the Uighur are not well treated by Mr Xi and Co. Perhaps they will ameliorate their attitude towards the people of Tibet and Xinjiang – we can but hope!
