There has been concern for several years over second homes or incomers to the Celtic areas buying up property and pushing up values. Places like Kernow, Mann and Cymru are wrestling with acute housing shortages.
Anger boiled over recently in Kernow when a second home was daubed with the words:
“Second home owners give something back: Rent or sell your empty houses to local people at a fair price.”
The daubing of properties is nothing new and indeed in Cymru and Mann homes have been burned over past decades.
Last month an estimated one thousand people attended a rally in Cymru protesting and calling for action. It was organised by Cymdeithas yr Iaith (Welsh Language Society) and held in Aberystwyth.
Meanwhile, promises to address the severe shortage of affordable properties to rent or buy in Mann which the new government (elected last year) pledged to address have so far not seen any concrete developments.
