NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE

There was an embarrassing faux pas at an International football tournament in the United States this weekend.

As players from Argentina and El Salvador stood for their respective National Anthems stadium officials inadvertently substituted the Manx National Anthem for that of El Salvador after the Argentine anthem had been played.

The players initially look confused (see video attachment) and then angry meanwhile the crowd which included many Salvadorans is palpably angry and the noise of protest grows.

The tournament took place in Washington DC which coincidentally has one of the largest expatriate Salvadoran communities in the United States.

Salvadorans take their football seriously in 1968 there was a brief conflict between the country and neighboring Honduras sparked by a football match (link to ‘La guerra del fútbol’, as it was termed, below):
