Rossa Ó Snodaigh, of the modern Irish music group, KÍLÁ, is also a writer betimes and his latest one for Christmas surely is aimed at the 7-11 age group and delightfully illustrated by Wayne O’ Connor. Of interest to us here in the Celtic League, is that he extended the scope of the book, Aistir ar an Aibítir, (A Journey through the Alphabet) published by Coiscéim at (€10), to include versions of the rhymes in the sister languages of Irish: Phil Gawne supplying the verses in Manx and Christopher Lewin in Gàidhlig. As an example, here is the verse for R in Irish:
Rothaigh Rónán ón Rómáin go dtí an Rúis,
Chun báidín a rámhaíocht thíos i bpluais.
Becoming in Manx
Ratch Ronan roar veih’n Romaan gys yn Roosh,
Dy raue baatey neose stiagh ‘syn ooig
And in Gàidhlig
Dh’fhalbh Rònàn air baidhsagal bho Romàinia dhan Rùis,
Gus bàta iomram shìos
Music which accompanies the alphabet journey can be downloaded from www.kila.ie/aistir
