In the past decade or so the main publicity in Europe has been on the aspirations of the Catalans and Scots to achieve independence.

However there are a broad range of separatist groups from the Urals to the Atlantic.

The wish of nations to have national homelands is not an irrational one. National self-determination is the spine of the international political system. After the First World War, the League of Nations and the mandate system were partially organized to bring political entities nearer to acknowledging the dream of a nation-state. A century on that dream for many is still unfulfilled.
