MANN: DAMAGING AND INACCURATE: RESPONDS TOP COP TO ANONYMOUS SLURS

The second in command of the Isle of Man Constabulary has angrily hit out against anonymous slurs made against him on an Internet Forum site.

Deputy Chief Constable, Gary Roberts, has described the comments (which have now been removed) as “pretty damaging and complete and utter rubbish,'” and he issued a detailed rebuttal.

Mr Roberts has warned he may sue saying:

“I can state absolutely clearly that I have never been suspended from duty; I have never been investigated for criminal conduct and I have an exemplary disciplinary record.

I would assume that those members who are suggesting otherwise are simply mistaken. I cannot contemplate that they have written what they have written other than by mistake.

I would appreciate it if they would unreservedly withdraw the comments they have made. No Deputy Chief Constable from this organisation has ever been suspended in regard to allegations of criminal conduct.

Even people like me can use civil processes to protect our reputations.”

Interestingly, a report on the issue by the Manx Independent carried on the newspapers Internet site `Isle of Man Today’ did not as usual invite readers –anonymously – to comment.

Normally when prominent figures such as Politicians, Trade Unionists or Nationalists are `in the news’ the paper asks in bold type at the foot of the article:

“WHAT DO YOU THINK?”

“Send your comments etc…”

The paper then enthusiastically recycles any salacious or cutting – anonymous – comments in the following week’s edition.

In this instance apparently the media take the view that discretion is the better course.
