Celtic League News

The 2016 Celtic League AGM will be held between 25th and 26th March in Dublin and has been organised to coincide with the centenary commemoration of the Irish 1916 Rising.

The programme for the Commemoration is set out below.

24 March: ‘Scotland and The Easter Rising’  Public Talk by Stephen Coyle, author
Venue: Ireland Institute, Pearse Street, Dublin 2
Time: 7pm

26 March: Celtic League Interceltic Commemoration and wreath laying
Venue: Republican 1916 Plot, Glasnevin Cemetery
Time: 10.30am

April: ‘Frongoch and The Birth of The IRA’
Public Talk by Lyn Ebenezer (Cymru)
Time and venue in Dublin TBC

June: CL Delegates visit Frongoch, Wales. Day trip by HSS from Dun Laoire, coach to and from Frongoch

Note: Celtic League AGM (members only) will be held on Friday 25th March and the afternoon of Saturday 26th at 6 Sráid Fhearchair (Harcourt St.) , Dublin 2, info from Branch Secs.

Other Commemorative Events and Parades

Revolution 1916 –Exhibition   Opening 27th Feb for 33 weeks in Ambassador Theatre, O’Connell St. Dublin
This is one of the events organised by Sinn Féin. There are other events  around Easter Weekend 24th -26th March Including commemoration parades. In April a Son et Lumiére is planned to  be held from April  24th (the actual date in 1916 that the Rising started) to April 29th at the GPO, HQ of the rebels. In May there will be dawn vigils at Kilmainham Gaol on the dates of the execution of the 1916 leaders. See  www.sinnfein.ie/1916

The main State parade will be on the Easter Sunday the 26th March. This will be a  military parade from Dame St. to the Parnell Square inclusive of a commemoration ceremony. The State was severely criticised by many for the atrocious video it produced months ago ( Ireland Inspires) which did not mention the leaders of the Rising nor the Proclamation.

On Saturday 23rd  March the 1916 Societies will hold their parade in Dublin to Arbour Hill, see  1916societies.com . RSF will hold theirs on April 23rd, see republicansinnfein.org/,  Éirigí commemorations will be in Belfast on Easter Monday and in Dublin on 14th May centred on James Connolly, see eirigi.org

Conradh na Gaeilge has various Irish language seminars and events running during the year to highlight the impact of the cultural and language revival in the early  years of the last century  and the situation of the language  situation today, with the slogan  (in Irish) ‘Commemorate 1916 by learning Irish’, see https://cnag.ie/

2016 The Citizen’s Commemoration will be held on held on Sunday 24th April starting at the GPO at 12.30pm. This is a non-political event organised by the National Graves Association in co-operation with Reclaim the Vision of 1916 (among whose patrons is artist Robert Ballagh, who organised the 75th commemoration , and some relatives of the 1916 leaders). A new refurbished 1916 monument will be unveiled at Glasnevin cemetery. See allevents.in › Dublin.
