New advisory role for Celtic League’s General Secretary
The Celtic League’s General Secretary (GS) has been elected to become an advisor to an international youth organisation that works to promote self determination and linguistic and cultural diversity throughout Europe.
The appointment came following an invite by the group European Free Alliance Youth (EFAy) to attend their General Assembly (GA) in the Venetian capital of Venice on 26th March 2010. The GS, Rhisiart Tal-e-bot, was president of the EFAy between 2007 and 2009, but since his departure the youth organisation has run into a number of difficulties. The GS was invited to the GA to offer his advice on how the group could pull together and work to further its aims, which include greater cooperation between nationalist youth groups throughout Europe and the promotion of the diversity and richness of Europe’s linguistic and cultural heritage.
After a difficult year a number of the bureau members of the EFAy resigned, including its president, and consequently elections took place to fill the remaining positions. The League’s GS will work to give advice to the new bureau throughout the course of the next year, until the organisation is up and running again. Speaking to delegates at the conference, which included representatives from the youth organisations of the Scottish Nationalist Party, Plaid Cymru and Union Démocratique Bretonne, the GS said:
“It is always difficult to run an international organisation where its leaders are working on a voluntary basis and are more often than not also heavily engaged in the work of their own groups within their own countries. Often this is in addition to maintaining a healthy family/social life and working full time. Choosing to take up a leading role in an international organisation such as the EFAy therefore requires commitment and a good knowledge of what you can contribute and are personally capable of. If everyone fulfils their responsibilities and works together as a team then the organisation can move forward.”
While president of the EFAy, the GS represented Kernow X – the youth organisation of Mebyon Kernow – the Part for Cornwall. The new president of the EFAy is Irati Aizpurua Alkezar from the Basque youth group Gazte Abertzaleak.
