MANNIN: Manx Police – loyal to the crown and not the people

Although there are undoubtedly more pressing policing issues on the Isle of Man the Celtic League understand that considerable resources continue to be devoted to the anti-nationalist crackdown on the Island.

A wide range of pro-independence graffiti which was daubed around the Island some weeks ago has now been entirely removed (most of it by volunteers). If anything the speed with which the `offending slogans’ were erased gave a lie to protestations by senior police officers that a major outbreak of so called `criminal damage’ had occurred.

Despite the transient nature of the pro-independence graffiti police efforts to suppress the political discontent are unabated. Anti-graffiti patrols continue and efforts to catch all the perpetrators of this (now vapourised) crime continue.

The effort and diligence with which senior police officers are addressing this issue must call into question if it is the action of daubing the walls or the message which was left which has caused the most discomfort.

However, it is clear that one casualty of all this is the image of the police themselves. In the eyes of most nationalists they have demonstrated that in terms of allegiance their loyalty is to the crown and the colonial status of the Island not to the community and the Manx people. Indeed the events of the past few weeks have made the term `Manx Police’ something of an oxymoron!
